The Traveling Sisterhood: Make Your Own Play-doh! Original & Edible #Recipes

Make Your Own Play-doh! Original & Edible #Recipes

We never, never buy play-doh at the store.  Making it is much more affordable, super easy (you could do it with your eyes closed after your first batch), and it lasts much longer than the store-bought kind.

Here's my tried and true recipe.

Flour-based play-doh

Ingredients
1 cup of flour
1 cup of water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/4 cup of salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
food coloring of preference

Directions
Put all the ingredients into a big pot and mix them up. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly. In a few minutes time, the dough will become hard to stir and will start to stick on the spoon. At this point, dump the dough onto wax paper, allow it to cool, and knead it until it is smooth.  Store the cooled “play dough” in a plastic bag or containers.

Edible Peanut Butter Play-doh
You can also be adventurous and try this recipe.  I haven't tried it yet but it's next on our list!  This treat can serve as edible play dough. Children can mold and shape while eating it. It's a great after school snack. Store extra portions in plastic bags in refrigerator or freezer.

Ingredients
1 3/4 cups peanut butter
2 cups confectioners sugar
1 3/4 cups honey
2 cups dry milk powder

Directions
In a large bowl, cream together peanut butter and confectioners' sugar, then beat in honey and fold in milk powder. Divide into equal portions and refrigerate until ready to use.

  1. I love the homemade recipes for play-dough. It gives the kids even more fun activities to do, since they can make it with you! I'm a little nervous about making edible play-dough though; I'd be concerned that it would encourage kids to eat any and all of the stuff, which couldn't be good in the long run...

    1. Really, no play-doh will hurt you. Even the regular stuff is made out of all edible ingredients... it just doesn't taste good. :)

  2. I didn't know regular play-doh was edible--good to know. My kids are 6 and 7 now though, so I don't think I have to worry about that so much anymore. But thanks for the recipes--we might try this.

  3. My husband cringes every time play-doh comes out. Hopefully he'll be ok with this edible kind. Thanks for posting that.

  4. I used to cook my play dough until I discovered that I could just put all the ingredients in a glass bowl minus the water part, but then put in 1 cup of HOT boiling water { last } and mix like crazy for 30 seconds and voila - cooked play dough without the pot stirring and time. Try it. You will never go back to cooking pot play dough again. :o)

The play dough is exactly the same as if doing it in a pot.

We always make our own too.

  5. You make me feel like trying to make my own play doh. I still haven't gotten around to it. Blame it on laziness! :) My tot is very attracted to the commercial play doh taste though so I may have to use your recipe now! Thanks for sharing on TGIF! That's how I found you! :) Valerie @ http://sortingsprinkles.blogspot.com
